Redistributing Tech
I have a new (to me) phone, same series but with more memory. The old phone has been returned to factory settings and is destined to replace the MiL’s phone which has ceased to be supported. This will mean that all three of our parents will have the same phone as me which makes life easier when they can’t do something or something goes awry. I am a very long way off being the tech support they seem to believe me to be.
My old iPad is also destined for a new owner, my Mum. We have only got her on a smart phone in the last 3 years and since she has now got the hang of her current one, she gets to try an iPad also. Dad has had an iPad for over a decade and is more confident on his iPad than he is with his phone but Mum has steered clear of them. No longer! Time will tell how she gets on with it but I am seeing a time coming when it will be easier to get Tesco to deliver than for the two of them to go to the store. This is all the more so given she announced the other day that she is not renewing her driving licence in February when it expires. Not that she is currently the primary driver in that household but I doubt Dad is going to be too many years behind her.
Many, many hours of fun may be had submitting an online grocery order. Still the MiL excels at internet shopping so I may be able to outsource the tech support on that one.
A colleague espouses the view that we shouldn’t give the older generation our old tech. Apparently it serves to embed their view that they are not good with tech. Interesting theory but since they all have the same level phone as me I am not seeing them as being disadvantaged here. Equally, having gifted Mum and Dad a rather newer, higher spec iPad than mine more than a decade ago and updating it from there with Dad being the only one to take to it, I’m not particularly minded to go high tech, with a price tag to match, to try and get Mum on board. I suspect some marketeer has had a hand in this particular argument.
That said, I do concede that it does mean that there are now two items more leaving this house to good homes. Not exactly a big decluttering success but definitely a move which we are very much in need of.
