AI taking over?
A friend asked me to cast an eye over a letter for them. Nothing actually wrong with it, I did a few checks re references within it and they appeared to be genuine and broadly on point. I prefer not to change someone else’s stuff purely to reflect my personal style (unless it is going out in my name) and left it as was.
It screamed AI. Chat GPT, I was told on enquiry. Their daughter had done it for them. This led me to a few conclusions. I say ‘led me to ‘, ‘reinforced’ might be nearer the mark:
- If using AI we need to do it ourselves and not get younger generations to do it for us. I am acutely aware of all things tech that I do not embrace/investigate further telling myself I do not need it but I don’t see how AI is to be avoided without handing an advantage to others we have to deal with daily.
- Unless/until we instruct it to use our preferred style, or at least play with the result a little, anything in writing is going to get very dull indeed.
- The only way to respond to it may well be to put it back to AI. An endless round of my electronic device talking to your electronic device!
- Typing/presentation as I was taught to type is history. To be fair, from what I have seen AI does seem to be able to place an apostrophe as I would wish it to be placed. Commas, however, are like a sprinkling of fairy dust and why oh why do they not have two spaces after a full stop?
- Just as well I am in the (probably quite lengthy) run up to retirement. My job is going and most likely sooner rather than later.
Another friend refers to Chat GPT as their best friend and speaks to it regularly throughout the day. I’m not ready for that level of relationship with an App so rest assured that any and all typos, poor punctuation or grammar in my blog are entirely down to me.
