My inner prepper …….
……has clearly been doing overtime. The door of the larder unit has not been true for a while so S sorted that after I had emptied it. Given the amount that came out we may have identified the source of the shift on the door. Let’s just say the door is now looking good and there is less inside than there was. In part this is down to a review of the best before dates. A bag of gram flour, a bag of Einkorn flour, a box of medjoul dates, a block of marzipan, a block of Halva and a block of muscovado sugar (no that last one does not usually come in a block but this was pretty solid), have all gone to landfill. My mean streak is busy berating my lazier self but neither have yet identified what I thought I was going to be making with that little selection, not least, as I am not exactly big on baking.
There was an interesting collection of tins also. The fruit cocktail is a trifle staple for us and we didn’t have one at Christmas. A variety of different beans and both chopped and plum tomatoes absolutely couldn’t do without though I may have overdone the volume. The large tin of pineapple rings, tin of peach slices and tin of mandarin segments are a little more surprising as is the tin of evaporated milk though I suppose if I was buying tinned peaches in some sort of nostalgic moment this might have been an obvious choice. I’m less sure why the 2 tins of corned beef, one tin of cooked ham, 4 Fray Bentos pies (various) and 4 Fray Bentos (2 each of steak & kidney and steak and gravy) made the trolley, let alone cupboard space. The pies are all the more surprising given we are rather a ‘cook from scratch’ household.
A quick sweep of the cupboard under the stairs revealed (in between boxes of apples wrapped in newspaper, jars of apple sauce, apple pie filling, bottled blackcurrants and mincemeat) a sizeable number of varying sized bottles of water, a large box of candles and a camping stove with half a dozen small gas cannisters for it. If you’re curious the torches, radio and batteries are elsewhere where we know they can be found.
It is possible my doomscrolling is getting out of control though on the positive side I can probably cut back on the grocery bill over the next few weeks.
