Operation make room in the freezers ….
….is in full swing …. and not really a rip roaring success.
So far this weekend I have made 2 large lasagnas (each a dinner and lunch for both of us), nearly 6 varyingly sized jars of blackberry and apple jelly, a double batch of blackcurrant ice cream, beef stock and chicken stock from the bones of past roast dinners. I have also cooked and sieved a kilo of green gooseberries for gooseberry and lemon curd.
Some of which have gone back into the freezer albeit in a more readily eatable fashion than the principal ingredients came out.
Also a steak supper (the steak bit), a Thai red fish curry (salmon and hake) and gooseberry fool. The previously frozen ingredients of which have definitely not returned to the freezer.
One would think that this would result in an obvious increase in space within the freezers but the freezer rules do not seem to play out quite like that. To be entirely truthful the small freezer in the garage is looking unusually roomy but this is a little at the expense of the kitchen freezer which had been looking as though the day might come when I could venture down a supermarket freezer aisle for something more than frozen peas, hash browns and the occasional bag of North Atlantic prawns. Doesn’t now!
I have also baked a lemon drizzle cake. A fail safe bake for me but absolutely nothing to do with the freezer.
Add in planting out some leeks, getting the watering system in the greenhouse up and going for summer, a little weeding, a lot of watering and several pickings of strawberries in an effort to keep ahead of the fat pigeons and it is an impressive housework avoidance tally for the weekend.
I have cleaned the bathroom and shower room, changed the bed, done the washing and ironing and both the kitchen and utility room do not look bad given what they have been put through. The rest of the house will just have to wait until next weekend because I am now done.
…..and now I have a baby Robin in my kitchen. This is less than ideal!
